Update: December 8, 2025

SFCH and Shelter took a whopping bite out of hunger! Last week, Grant Specialist Angie Smith and Executive Assistant Sarah Nichols collected all of the food donation boxes at SFCH and Shelter and delivered them to Feeding South Dakota in Sioux Falls.

“Every single day, you give from your hearts to those entrusted to our care,” said Angie. “Over the past three weeks, you’ve gone above and beyond. Together, we donated 315 pounds of food! Just like the work you do every day, these gifts make a real difference.”

Even our kiddos got involved in the efforts. They wrote incredibly sweet—and very cute—notes that we taped to some of the boxes and cans. Their messages included encouragements like “You are strong!”, “Eat and be happy!” and “Life’s a climb, but the view is worth it.”

An update from the Black Hills will be coming next week!

Join us in taking a bite out of hunger and making a difference in our communities through the CHS food drive! This holiday season, staff are invited to help give the gift of hope—and a warm meal—to individuals and families in need. Our goal is to make a positive impact on those experiencing hardships due to the government shutdown, cuts to SNAP, or other unforeseen circumstances.

The food drive runs from November 10 through December 1. Donation boxes will be available in the following areas:

  • SFCH Admin Building: Box by Kelly Dix’s desk
  • Shelter: Work room
  • Loving School: Work room
  • Van Demark Up: Work room
  • Rockerville: Location TBD

All items collected in Sioux Falls will be donated to Feeding South Dakota, which distributes food to families across the state. Staff are encouraged to donate nonperishable boxed or canned items. Rapid City and Rockerville will also be doing a food collection for Volunteers of America.

The most needed foods include:

  • Peanut butter & jelly
  • Canned chicken & tuna
  • Canned fruits & vegetables
  • Taco shells, tortillas, seasoning
  • Canned pasta meals and stews
  • Boxed pasta meals & easy mac
  • Microwave meals
  • Baking mixes
  • Pancake mixes & syrup
  • Rice, pasta, pasta sauce
  • Cereal and oatmeal
  • Kid-friendly snacks
  • Granola bars

For safety reasons, please do not donate open products, items with damaged packaging, glass containers, baked goods, home-canned or self-processed foods, or baby food.

For questions, please contact Grant Specialist Angie Smith. Let’s come together to take a bite out of hunger and make a difference in our communities!
